FarStone and Linspire Launch Personal Disaster Recovery Solution
RestoreIT® provides Linspire’s operating system with a safety net for everyday computing hazards
SAN DIEGO, CA — April 24, 2006 — In a long-awaited move to address security for desktop Linux, FarStone Technology, Inc. and Linspire, Inc. today announced a partnership to offer a Linux version of FarStone’s award-winning Personal Disaster Recovery™ solution, RestoreIT. The software, designed to complement Linspire’s desktop Linux-based operating systems, allows users to restore lost data or an entire system that has been damaged due to computer errors or other common mishaps. The announcement today takes place at the fourth annual Desktop Linux Summit in San Diego, an event focused exclusively on Linux and open source software for the desktop.
“As desktop Linux grows in popularity and becomes the operating system of choice for many consumers, small businesses and academic institutions, common PC disasters will likely affect Linux users as seen with Windows users,” said Tom Fedro, executive vice president, FarStone. “Whether recovering from OS failure, finding a deleted file, undoing the effects of spyware and other malicious attacks, FarStone is uniquely positioned to provide fast data and OS restore functionality to Linspire and the Linux market. We are pleased to be working with Linspire to develop RestoreIT for Linux, a solution we firmly believe will become the standard in the desktop Linux market.”
Called RestoreIT Linux Edition (LE), the software will be on display at the summit, where both Linspire and FarStone are gold-level sponsors. FarStone’s director of business development, Jerry Puda is a speaker at the summit and will illustrate the importance of having an easy to use, always on, data and system recovery solution for desktop Linux computers. The session, titled, “UNDO PC Disasters – Personal Disaster Recovery solutions for the Linux Desktop,” will discuss common PC disaster scenarios and show how FarStone’s RestoreIT provides a complete and simple-to-use solution. Demonstrations of the software will be held during the session and at FarStone’s booth #11 throughout the show.
“Because Linspire’s goal is to provide an easy and safe computing experience for our end users, having an easy mechanism to protect them from the unforeseen system failure or accidental user error is very important to us,“ said Randy Linnell, Vice President of Business Development for Linspire.“ While there are backup and recovery solutions available for advanced Linux users, FarStone was the only solution that we were confident would be powerful, flexible, and easy enough to use for all computer users. We’re delighted to work with FarStone — already a leader in disaster recovery on the Windows platform — to pioneer bringing this comprehensive protection to Linux.”
RestoreIT LE will be available to customers soon through a variety of channels, including Linspire’s CNR (Click and Run) Warehouse as well as pre-installed on computers offered by Linspire partners.
FarStone’s RestoreIT is a simple software program that makes data and system recovery easy. The user can quickly reset their entire system to an earlier, pre-crash, pre-problem state, even if the operating system won’t boot. The software tracks all changes to a user’s hard drive on a separate hidden disk partition as incremental back up points. In the event of a disaster, a user can restore the system and data that they have lost, as well as choose how far back they would like to go — an hour, two hours, etc. By simply clicking the spacebar, users can instantly restore their data, files or a complete system. Since it loads before the OS, RestoreIT will recover all files, system applications and personal settings and passwords. In addition to automatic backups per a user defined schedule, RestoreIT can also be configured to automatically restore to pre-defined backups on a regular basis. Perfect for computer labs, libraries, and Internet cafes, RestoreIT can reset a PC to a pristine state at the beginning or end of a business day and undo any changes to the workstation that typically occur with multiple users. Once the PC is configured in this manner, the administrator does not need to manually reset it.
