Installation

“What are the licensing restrictions for DriveClone Pro? Can I install it on more than one computer?”

Licensed copies of DriveClone Pro can be installed and used on one single computer at a given time. If you need to use DriveClone Pro on multiple computers, you will need to purchase a license for each one.

“I can’t find DriveClone Pro’s System Snapshot and File Version Recovery features. Where are they?”

These features appear after you do a custom installation of DriveClone Pro 5, and can be added to your existing installation. Run the DriveClone Pro 5 installer again and follow the prompts to add these missing features.

“After I installed DriveClone Pro, my system would no longer boot to Windows. What happened and how do I fix it?”

Changes to your computer’s Master Boot Record (MBR) can cause problems like this. After you install DriveClone Pro’s advanced features — System Snapshots and File Version Recovery — we recommend that you create a Rescue CD. The Rescue CD lets you repair your Master Boot Record or uninstall DriveClone Pro, should you later install software that conflicts with DriveClone Pro.

If you can’t boot your computer immediately after you install DriveClone Pro, you can resolve your Master Boot Record issues by (depending on your operating system):

  1. Booting from a Windows 98 Boot Disk and entering the FDISK/MBR command
  2. Booting from a Windows XP CD, entering the XP Recovery Console, and running the FIXMBR command
  3. Booting from a Vista DVD and selecting Startup Repair from the System Recovery Options

Product Use

“Can I create a bootable disc with DriveClone Pro? If so, what does it do?”

DriveClone Pro creates two types of bootable discs:

  1. A recovery disc, which saves your complete hard drive on a CD or DVD. If your system crashes and you have to replace your hard drive, booting from a recovery disc lets you restore your system information and data to the new hard drive.
  2. A startup disc, which restores your computer from an image file. Use a startup disc if DriveClone Pro is not installed on your computer, but you want to restore from a saved image. The startup disc will boot to the DriveClone Pro pre-OS screen. You’ll be able to browse local drives or network shares for your backup image and restore your computer.

“What’s the difference between a clone and a backup image?”

A clone copies the complete contents of a hard drive or partition to another hard drive or partition, on-the-fly, usually overwriting all data in the destination drive. DriveClone Pro can clone hard drives within Windows.

A backup image stores a complete backup of a hard drive or partition as a compressed image file (or a set of image files) which can coexist with other files on the destination drive. This image file can later be restored to the original source drive or to a new destination drive. The new drive should be of the same size or larger than the original source drive.

"I have a large hard drive with an installed operatin system and lots of unused space. Can DriveClone Pro clone my system to a smaller drive?"

No. DriveClone Pro cannot clone a drive or partition to a smaller drive or partition. You will need to use third party software to resize the partition so that the source drive is equal to or smaller in size than the destination drive.

“How do I resize the Snapshot partition?”

Open the DriveClone Pro 5 Main Console and select the Settings tab. In the General section, youll find a link: Resize Secure Area. Resizing the Secure Area will erase any existing System Snapshots. If you dont want to lose any backup data, be sure to make a Complete Backup Image before you continue with this option.

Compatibility & Support

“What RAID controllers does DriveClone Pro support?”

Please view our list of supported RAID controllers.

“I can’t create a working set of CD-DVD images in DriveClone Pro. What could be causing the problem?”

Be sure to activate the Image Integrity Check option when you create your backup. The process will launch after each disc is burned. If you’re using a notebook or a CD-DVD drive that does not automatically reload the disc, you’ll need to push the disc tray back in to enable the image integrity check. Once the image integrity check is complete, you may be prompted to insert another disc.

If you continue to experience issues with your backup CD-DVD sets, please contact FarStone Technical Support.

“Can DriveClone Pro image or clone a Linux operating system or Linux-based partition?”

Yes, but DriveClone Pro does not support installation on a Linux-based operating system. You will need to install DriveClone on a computer running a supported Windows operating system, then attach the hard drive with the Linux operating system or partition as a secondary / slave hard drive. At that point, you can clone or image the Linux-based drive.

“Is DriveClone Pro compatible with Windows 2003 Server or other server operating systems?”

No, you cannot install DriveClone Pro on a server operating system. With a computer running a desktop operating system, you can, however, install and configure a hard drive containing a server operating system as a secondary / slave hard drive to image a server’s hard drive.
